The Foresters were founded in 1996 and have been one of the most successful teams in the West Coast League since their inception. The team has won eight league championships and has made it to the playoffs in all but two years.
How the Foresters became the best Baseball team in town
The Santa Barbara Foresters are a minor League Baseball team based in Santa Barbara, California. The Foresters play in the West Coast League a collegiate summer baseball league They were founded in 1986 as an expansion team of the Broward County-based Florida State League.
The Foresters were originally owned by Bill Moore, who also owned the Fort Lauderdale Yankees and the Miami Marlins and were managed by former Yankees player and manager Billy Martin The team played its home games at Pershing Field in Santa Barbara.
In their inaugural season, the Foresters finished with a record of 67-73 and finished in second place in the North Division of the Florida State League behind the first-place Vero Beach Dodgers.
In 1987, the team’s record improved to 80-60 and they won the North Division title. They lost to the eventual league champion Fredericksburg Dodgers in the first round of playoffs.
In 1988, Moore sold the team to Carl Roselle. The team’s affiliation with the Yankees ended after the 1988 season and they became an affiliate of the San Diego Padres In 1989, they once again won the North Division title with a record of 83-57 and defeated Fredericksburg in the playoffs to win their first League Championship
