The 2017-2018 UMass Lowell Hockey Team welcomes six newcomers to the program this season. Forward Reid Stefanson (Edmonton, Alta.) joins the River Hawks after spending the last two seasons with the Broomfield Eagles in the North American Hockey League (NAHL). Defensemen Lucas Condotta (West Chester Pa.), Kieran Burr (Rochester, N.Y.) and Mattias Sholl (Kissell, Pa.) all come to Umass Lowell after successful junior hockey careers. In goal, Cam Johnson (Oakville, Ont.) joins the River Hawks from the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League (USHL), while blogspot Collin Olkonen comes to Lowell from Salisbury prep school

Key Departures

This season, the Mass Lowell Hockey Team will have several key departures from last year’s squad. Goaltender Kevin Boyle, who was a mainstay in net for the River Hawks over the past two seasons, has signed a professional contract with the Anaheim Ducks organization. Forward A.J. White, who was one of the team’s top offensive players has also signed a professional contract and will be playing for the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack this season. defenseman Dylan Zink, who was a key player on the blue line has graduated and will be playing professionally in Europe this season. Colin Wilson: A senior from Marblehead, Massachusetts, Wilson is the River Hawks’ leading returning scorer. He had 15 goals and 19 assists last season. Wilson is a skilled player who is good at finding open ice and creating scoring chances for his teammates. He will need to continue to be a leader for this young team.

Joe Gambardella: Another Marblehead native, Gambardella is entering his junior year. He had 13 goals and 15 assists last season and is another skilled forward who can create offense. Gambardella also has a good work ethic and is one of the team’s best forecheckers.

C.J. Smith: A sophomore from Des Moines Iowa, Smith was one of the River Hawks’ top scorers as a freshman, with 14 goals and 18 assists. Derek Arnold: A senior from Groton, Connecticut, Arnold is another experienced forward who will be counted on to provide leadership for this young team. He had 9 goals and 12 assists last season while playing in all 38 games for the River Hawks. Arnold is good at winning face-offs and killing penalties, and he will likely see time on both special teams units again this season.

Defenders

Michael Kapla: A junior from Eau Claire Wisconsin, Kapla was named Hockey East’s Best Defensive Defenseman last season after leading all league blueliners with 12 goals and 20 assists. He has good size (6’0″, 200 lbs.) and is solid in his own end of the ice. Kapla also has a knack for joining the rush and creating offense from the blue line He will be one of the leaders of this young River Hawks team both on and off the ice this season

Outlook
