Akbar Cook, a 6’2″ shooting guard from Maryland, is making a name for himself not just on the court, but in the kitchen as well.

Cook, who played his collegiate career at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), was born and raised in Takoma Park, Md. He started cooking at a young age, watching his mother and grandmother cook traditional Ethiopian meals. He continued to develop his skills in the kitchen throughout High School and college, even taking a culinary class his senior year of high school

Now, as he begins his Professional Basketball career with the latter part of the season winding down, he is using his cooking skills to connect with his teammates and create a sense of community within the locker room He has even started making dinner for his teammates on some nights after practice.

“I just enjoy doing it,” Cook told The Washington Post “It puts me in a good mood.”

Not only is he using his cooking to create bonds with his teammates, but he is also using it as a way to Stay Connected to his culture. Growing up Ethiopian in America can be isolating, he said, but cooking Ethiopian food allows him to feel closer to home.

“It’s always been a part of me,” he said. “It’s something I enjoy doing and it makes me feel closer to my roots.”

Akbar Cook’s Journey to the NBA

Akbar Cook’s journey to the NBA was not an easy one. A former Division II player, he was undrafted and spent time in the G-League before catching on with the Brooklyn Nets But he persevered, and now he’s an NBA player with his own cooking show.

Akbar grew up in inner-city Newark, NJ, and was exposed to violence at a young age. His mother was killed when he was just a child, and his father was incarcerated shortly thereafter. At 16, Akbar found himself living in a group home. It was there that he began to develop his love for cooking.

“I started cooking as a way to cope with my situation,” Akbar said. “It was a way for me to forget about my problems and focus on something positive.”

That positive focus led Akbar to pursue a career in the culinary arts. He attended culinary school and worked in various restaurants before deciding to give basketball a shot.

“I always loved basketball, but I never thought I could play professionally,” Akbar said. “Once I realized that it was a possibility, I decided to give it my all.”

Akbar’s hard work paid off, and he earned a spot on the Nets’ Summer League team in 2018. He didn’t make the team’s final roster that year, but he continued to work hard and finally made it to the NBA in 2019.

Now, Akbar is using his platform to inspire others with his story and his cooking show. “I want people to see that anything is possible,” he said. “No matter where you come from or what you’ve been through, you can always achieve your dreams.”

Whether you’re packing a suitcase or a cooler, Cook says the key is to “travel light but travel smart.” He recommends bringing along food that is non-perishable and easy to cook.

“My go-to travel foods are instant oatmeal, ramen noodles, and rice,” he says. “I also always make sure to bring along some snacks like granola bars or trail mix.”

Cook also recommends bringing along some seasonings to make your meals more flavorful. “I always travel with salt, pepper, and chili powder,” he says. “These spices can really transform a dish.”

Finally, Cook says it’s important to stay hydrated while you’re on the road. “I always make sure to bring along a water bottle ” he says. “Coffee and tea are also great options for staying hydrated.”

Akbar Cook’s Advice for aspiring Basketball Players
