The Early Days of Alexandria Hockey
Alexandria hockey dates back to the early 1900s, when the sport was first introduced to the city. A local team the Alexandria Hockey Club was formed in 1903 and began competing against teams from other cities in the area. The club was successful in its early years, winning several championships.
interest in hockey began to decline in the city in the 1920s and 1930s, and the Alexandria Hockey Club disbanded in 1937. The sport would not return to Alexandria until nearly two decades later.
In 1955, a group of Hockey Enthusiasts from Alexandria decided to revive the sport in the city. They formed a new team, called the Alexandria Hornets, and began playing games against teams from nearby towns. The Hornets were successful in their early years, winning several championships.
Today, hockey is once again popular in Alexandria. The city is home to two Junior hockey teams, the Alexandria Blizzard and the Alexandria Icemen. Both teams compete in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League (MJHL).
The Rise of Alexandria Hockey
Although hockey is now a widely popular sport it wasn’t always that way. In the early 1800s, hockey was a relatively unknown sport, played only by a few people in a handful of countries. But that changed in the mid-19th century, when the sport began to gain popularity in Europe and North America
During this time, Alexandria, Virginia was one of the hotbeds of hockey activity. The first recorded game of hockey in Alexandria took place in 1853, between two teams of British soldiers stationed in the city. However, it wasn’t until 1885 that organized hockey really began to take off in Alexandria.
That year, the Alexandria Hockey Club was founded. The club quickly became one of the most successful Hockey teams in the Washington area. In 1889, they even won the first-ever Washington area championship.
The Alexandria Hockey Club continued to dominate the Washington hockey scene for years to come. In fact, they were so successful that they were one of only four teams invited to compete in the inaugural Stanley Cup tournament in 1893. Although they didn’t win the Stanley Cup their success helped put Alexandria on the map as a hockey town.
Today, Alexandria is home to several successful youth and adult hockey programs. And thanks to the efforts of early pioneers like the Alexandria Hockey Club hockey is now a well-established part of life in the city.
The Golden Age of Alexandria Hockey
From the 1920s to the 1950s, Alexandria hockey enjoyed a “golden age.” The city had three amateur teams: the Alexandria senior men’s team, the Alexandria junior men’s team, and the Alexandria Ladies’ team. All three teams were members of provincial championships. The Senior Men’s team won the Manitoba Senior Championship in 1922 and 1923. The Junior Men’s team won the Manitoba Juvenile Championship in 1929. The Ladies’ team won the District Women’s Championship six times between 1928 and 1935.
The Decline of Alexandria Hockey
In the 1970s, Alexandria hockey was in decline. The town’s two arenas, the Alexandria Ice Palace and the West End Arena, were in disrepair, and the town’s only Youth Hockey program had folded. In response to this decline, a group of local residents formed the Alexandria Hockey Association in 1978. The Association’s goal was to revive hockey in Alexandria by providing children with the opportunity to learn and play the sport.
The Association began its work by fixing up the West End Arena, which had been closed for several years. They then started a Youth Hockey program, which quickly grew to include over 100 children. In its first year, the program had so much success that the Association decided to open a second arena, the Fort Ross Rink.
Today, Alexandria hockey is thriving. The town has two arenas and two youth hockey programs and hockey is once again an important part of the community.
The Resurgence of Alexandria Hockey

The arena quickly became a mecca for hockey in Northern Virginia, hosting High School and College Games as well as local and regional tournaments.
In 2001, the Alexandria Blizzard joined the United Hockey League as an expansion team. The Blizzard brought professional hockey back to Alexandria for the first time since the early 20th century. The team enjoyed moderate success on the ice, making the playoffs in their first two seasons. However, financial difficulties led to the team’s demise in 2006.
Since then, Alexandria hockey has continued to grow at all levels. The Barbarians Arena is now home to two youth hockey programs – the Alexandria Hockey Academy and Northern Virginia Black Bears – as well as several adult leagues. high school hockey is also thriving in Alexandria, with both T.C. Williams and Bishop Ireton fielding competitive teams.
The Future of Alexandria Hockey

The new arena will provide a much-needed home for the Alexandria Blizzard, the city’s junior Hockey Team and will also be used for other events such as concerts and conventions. This will bring more people to the city and help boost the economy. The Youth Hockey program is already producing some talented players, and with more support, they will only get better.
