Dover High School’s boys basketball team is known for its strong search and block abilities. The varsity team has won numerous championships and continues to be one of the top teams in the state. The traveling school also has a strong Basketball Program which is open to all boys in the search and block program.

History

The first recorded instance of boys playing basketball at Andover occurred in 1900, when a group of students formed a team to play against other schools in the area. In the years that followed, basketball became increasingly popular at the school, with both varsity and traveling teams playing against other schools in the area.

In the early years of the sport, there was no formalized structure to the season or playoffs, making it difficult to gauge the success of teams from year to year. However, beginning in the 1910-11 season, a boys Basketball League was formed with Andover as one of its original members. This league eventually became the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC), which is still in existence today.

Andover has been very successful in Boys Basketball since joining NEPSAC, winning 17 league championships and appearing in 23 finals. The most recent championship came in 2016, when Andover defeated Exeter in the Class A final. In addition to its success in NEPSAC tournaments, Andover has also had a Number of players go on to have successful careers at the collegiate and professional levels.

The Game

Boys Basketball is a winter sport at Andover High School The season starts in December and ends in February. Tryouts are held in the fall for the varsity and Junior varsity teams. If you make one of the teams, you will have practices every day after school until 5:00 pm. You will also have games on most Tuesdays and Fridays, and some Saturdays. You will travel to other schools in our conference for games.

Andover is a member of the Hockomock League. Our conference is made up of 11 schools: Acton-Boxborough, Andover, Attleboro, Franklin, Holliston, King Philip, Mansfield, Milford, North Attleboro, Oliver Ames and Sharon.

Andover Boys basketball strives to promote a positive environment for all participants by enforcing the following rules:

-All players must have a current physical on file with the school in order to participate.

-No jewelry is allowed to be worn during games or practices.

-Players are not allowed to leave practice or games without permission from a coach or parent.

-Boys must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in order to participate.

-All boys must rides the bus to and from away games unless they have a note from a parent excusing them.

-Players are expected to attend all practices and games unless they have an emergency situation or prior permission from a coach.
