Rules

In basketball, a lot of people think that the only rules are you shoot the ball in the hoop and you get one, two or three points, depending on how far away you are from the hoop. But there are actually a ton of different rules that vary depending on where in the world you’re Playing

In this series, we’ll be travelling around to different countries to explore the variations in the game of basketball We’ll start with some basics and then build up to more complicated rule changes. So let’s begin with a transcript of a videoread by ESPN commentator, Jeff Van Gundy He’s going to explain some of the basic rules of basketball.

Van Gundy: “Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five players each on a rectangular court. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop eighteen inches in diameter and ten feet high mounted to a backboard at each end.”

“The game is played with either one or two referees who each hold a whistle and wear a striped shirt. The officials also keep track of fouls, violations and scores.”

“A player must be holding the ball with both hands while taking steps or making any type of move except when they’re shooting or passing.”

“The teammates can box out by using their bodypositioningto keep opponents from getting rebound shots.”

“After shooting the ball, players can Immediately go after it if their shot doesn’t go in.”

“Basically, Teams alternate possessions until one team scores at which time that team gains possession again.” “The other team has to wait until the next dead-ball situation to get the ball back.””So that’s just kind of some general overview stuff,” says Van Gundy Now let’s move on to specific rule changes around the world.”
