Baseball has been a part of Ball State University since the school’s founding in 1918. The sport was first played on what is now the site of the Alumni Center, and the first team was coached by John W. Bunn. In 1925, the baseball team moved to what is now known as Worthen Arena, where it played its games until 1966. In 1967, the Baseball Team moved again, this time to a brand new facility on the South Side of campus. The field was made possible by a donation from Robert Taylor, a local businessman and Ball State alumnus.

The field is named after Robert M. Taylor Sr., who played baseball for Ball State from 1951-1953. Upon his graduation, Taylor was drafted by the Chicago Cubs and played minor League Baseball for their organizational affiliate, the Des Moines Demons. After his professional career, Taylor returned to Muncie and worked for Firestone Tire & Rubber Company. In addition to his donation to Ball State Taylor also served as a member of the school’s Board of Trustees from 1968-1977. He passed away in January of 2010 at the age of 84.
