A League of Their Own
One of the most popular baseball movies of all time is A League of Their Own, starring Tom Hanks Geena Davis, and Lori Petty. The film tells the story of the women’s Professional Baseball League that was created during World War II. While the league only lasted for a few years, it was an important part of American history.
Eight Men Out
Eight Men Out is a 1988 film directed by John Sayles and starring Charlie Sheen D. B. Sweeney, Michael Rooker, and Christopher Lloyd. The film is based on the true story of the Chicago White Sox team that conspired to intentionally lose the 1919 World Series Sayles wrote the screenplay based on Elliot Asinof’s 1963 book of the same name.
The title refers to the eight Chicago White Sox players who were banned from Major League Baseball for their role in the fix: “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, Oscar Felsch, Eddie Cicotte, Claude “Lefty” Williams, Arnold Gandil, Charles Risberg, Fred McMullin, and Swede Risberg. John Cusack plays Ring Lardner Jr., a young sportswriter who chronicles their story. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Cinematography ( Haskell Wexler) and Best Supporting Actor ( Michael Rooker).
Field of Dreams
Field of Dreams is a Baseball Classic starring Kevin Costner If you build it, they will come. That’s the thinking behind an Iowa farmer who, despite the misgivings of his wife and neighbors, carves a baseball diamond in his cornfield following the directions of a mysterious voice. Once the project is completed, departed players from the Chicago White Sox come to play, as well as other baseball greats of years past, giving the farmer a second chance to live out his dreams.
For Love of the Game
One of the best baseball movies of all time, “For Love of the Game,” features not only some amazing gameplay, but also a great love story. The film follows an aging baseball player Billy Chapel (played by Kevin Costner), as he prepares to make his final start for the Detroit Tigers Chapel is trying to win one last game for the team he’s been with for most of his career, but he’s also struggling with the decision to retire. In the end, Chapel throws a perfect game but does so without the love of his life by his side.
The Bad News Bears
The Bad News Bears is a 1976 American sports comedy film directed by Michael Ritchie. It stars Walter Matthau and Tatum O’Neal. The film was followed by two sequels, The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training in 1977 and The Bad News Bears Go to Japan in 1978.
The Natural
The Natural is a 1984 American sports drama film adaptation of Bernard Malamud’s 1952 novel of the same name, directed by Barry Levinson and starring Robert Redford Glenn Close, and Robert Duvall. The film, like the book, recounts the experiences of an aging baseball player Roy Hobbs with supernatural talents.
The Sandlot
The Sandlot is a coming-of-age Baseball Movie directed by David Mickey Evans. The film follows a group of young baseball players during the summer of 1962. The Sandlot became a cult classic, and is often considered one of the best baseball movies of all time. The film features Michael Neill as Scotty Smalls, Thomas Guiry as Mikey, Patrick Renna as Ham, Chauncey Leopardi as Squints, and Art LaFleur as Mr. Mertle.
Major League
If you’re a fan of baseball movies, you’re in luck. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of one of the best: “Major League ” The 1989 movie, starring Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes and Dennis Haysbert, among others, follows the fictional Cleveland Indians as they try to turn their season around.
But “Major League” isn’t just a great baseball movie it’s also a great Angels movie. That’s because Haysbert plays Pedro Cerrano, the team’s slugger who is struggling to hit curveballs. Cerrano ultimately figures out how to hit the curveball (spoiler alert!), and the Indians go on to win the pennant.
