The World Series

The World Series is the annual Championship Series of Major League Baseball (MLB). The winner of the World Series receives the Commissioner’s Trophy. As the series is played in October, during the season’s last month, it is sometimes referred to as the “fall classic”. First played in 1903, the Series has been conducted every year since except for 1904 and 1994, when it was cancelled due to labour stoppages in each league.

The best-of-seven style has been the format of all World Series except in 1903, 1919, 1920 and 1921, when the winner was determined by a best-of-nine series. Baseball Tonight host Karl Ravech called Game 7 of the 2001 World Series—in which the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees—”the greatest game ever played”, while fellow ESPN personality Steve Phillips said afterward that “there’s no doubt that this is the greatest baseball game ever played”. Game 7 of that same Series was ranked by ESPN as the second-greatest game ever played.
