The Bernie Mac Story
The life of Bernie Mac was full of comedy, heart, and soul. From his start as a stand-up comedian to his iconic roles in Film and Television, Bernie Mac was a force to be reckoned with. Sadly, Bernie Mac passed away in 2008 due to complications from pneumonia.
Bernie Mac was born on October 5th, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the youngest of four children born to Mary McCullough and Jeffery Harrison. His mother worked as a nurse while his father worked as aloader at a local steel mill. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, Bernie Mac experienced firsthand the racism and violence that plagued the city during the 1960s and 1970s. Despite this, he was able to find humour in even the darkest of situations.
After graduation High School BernieMac enlisting in the United States Marine Corps Reserve but was soon honorably discharged due to asthma. Upon his return to Chicago, he began working various odd jobs before finally finding his calling as a stand-up comedian. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Rhonda Gorenstein. The two were married in 1977 and welcomed their only child, Ja’Niece McCullough, into the world soon after.
Bernie Mac’s big break came in 1992 when he starred in the film “Mo’ Money.” This led to roles in films such as “Friday,” “The Players Club,” “Soul Food,” “How To Be A Player” and many others. In 2001, he landed his own television show titled “The Bernie Mac Show” which ran for five seasons and earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Some of his other notable Television roles include appearances on “Martin,” “New York Undercover” and “Def Comedy Jam.”
Throughout his career, Bernie Mac used his platform to give back to the community that raised him. He was a strong supporter of children’s charities such as Make-A-Wish Foundation and The Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In 2007, he even established The Bernie Mac Foundation which is dedicated to raising awareness about Sarcoidosis – the disease that ultimately took his life.
Bernie Mac was more than just a talented entertainer; he was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
The Making of the Movie
The making of the long-awaited Bernie Mac baseball movie is finally underway! The film, which is currently untitled, will tell the story of the late comedian’s life, from his humble beginnings growing up on the South Side of Chicago to his successful career in Hollywood.
Bernie’s widow, Rhonda, is serving as a producer on the project, which will be directed by Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang) and written by Jack Heller (Bad Times at the El Royale). shooting is set to begin this summer.
The film will focus on Bernie’s love of baseball which was a cornerstone of his comedy. In addition to his stand-up routines and sitcom roles, Bernie was also an avid baseball fan and commentator, hosting the MLB Network’s “Set It Off” alongside former MLB player Adam LaRoche.
