The area now known as Coney Island was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. In 1609, Henry Hudson sailed his ship the Halve Maen (Half Moon) into what would later be named Newtown Creek and observed what he called “a great long sandy shore full of people”. This was most likely the first recorded European sighting of Coney Island. The Dutch began settling in Brooklyn in 1636, and by 1645 had founded six towns: Boswyck, Brooklyn, Breuckelen, Flatlands, Gravesend, and New Utrecht. In 1652, Robert Singer built a Rhode Island style windmill on Staten Island that could grind grain into flour; this windmill is believed to be the first gristmill in New York State A few years later, NineteenthDutchman Joris Jansen Rapalje negotiated the purchase of Staten Island from Chief Raritan of the Lenape tribe for 60 guilders (about $24 US dollars).
The Coney Island Baseball Stadium
