They are currently coached by Danton Cole. The Spartans play their home games at Munn Ice Arena on MSU’s campus in East Lansing Michigan. Munn Ice Arena opened in 1974 and is currently the largest arena in college hockey with a capacity of 6,470.

MSU began strictly as a club program in 1922 and achieved success quickly, winning the AHAC championship in only their second year of existence. In just their third season, MSU won the IAHA championship, which they would go on to win again in 1928 and 1929. Upon joining the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) in 1966, MSU won the conference championship twice more in 1969 and 1986. Michigan State has made 28 NCAA Tournament appearances with their most recent coming in 2019. Their best finish came during the 1987 tournament where they went all the way to the Frozen Four before losing to North Dakota 3-2 in OT in the national semifinals. Overall, MSU has advanced to the Frozen Four eight times and has an NCAA-leading 12 CCHA regular season championships.
