The Delbarton baseball team won the state title on Sunday, June 10th. This is their first state title in school history.
Barton Baseball team’s season overview
The Delbarton Baseball Team had an incredible season, culminating in a state championship title. The team’s success can be attributed to their strong pitching staff, deep lineup, and excellent team defense.
Led by ace pitcher Mattias Lupo, the Green Wave pitching staff was one of the best in the state. Lupo was virtually unhittable all season, posting a 0.77 ERA with 107 strikeouts in only 65 innings pitched He was named the Gatorade New Jersey baseball player of the Year, as well as the NJSIAA Tournament MVP.
The Delbarton lineup featured a potent mix of power and speed. Shortstop Frankie Cossa was the team’s leading hitter, batting .471 with 4 home runs and 22 RBIs. Center fielder Chris Burke was a force on the basepaths, stealing 29 bases while also providing excellent defense in center field. First baseman Ryan Kirkpatrick provided power from the left side of the plate, hitting 6 home runs and driving in 27 runs.
The Delbarton defense was also stellar, committing only 15 errors all season. Burke and Kirkpatrick were both excellent defensively at their respective positions, while Cossa and second baseman Liam Conway turned a number of double plays up the middle. Lupo and fellow pitchers Jack Hittel and Luke Pinto were also very good at field their positions, combining for only 5 errors between them.
Delbarton’s run to the state title was truly a team effort, with every member contributing to their success. It was an amazing season for the Green Wave one that will long be remembered by Delbarton fans everywhere.

The Delbarton baseball team has won the state title, defeating their opponents with a score of 7-2. This is the team’s first state title victory in Delbarton’s history. The team was led by pitcher Mark Dente, who pitched a complete game, and first baseman Joe Boggiano, who had 3 RBIs.

The Delbarton baseball team’s drive to win a state title came up just short in a 5-4 loss to Seton Hall Prep in the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions final on Wednesday.
It was a tough pill to swallow for Green Wave (28-3), who had won 28 straight games and lead 4-0 after four innings Seton Hall Prep rallied.
“It’s disappointing,” said Delbarton coach Bruce Shatel, whose team was trying to become the first Morris County squad to win a T of C title. “But at the same time, I think our guys battled their butts off all season long. They should be proud of what they accomplished. They had a great year. We just didn’t get it done today.”
Delbarton, which reached the T of C final for the first time since 2009, got off to a blazing start Wednesday as two-run homers by junior catcher Matt Dacey (2-for-4) and senior first baseman Dan Fornal in the bottom of the first gave it a 4-0 advantage.
But Seton Hall Prep (24-6), which got two hits apiece from senior Left fielder Connor Cuffe and junior second baseman Luke Willis, rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by senior shortstop Alec Bloom and a two-run homer by freshman third baseman Ryan Ramiz to make it 4-3.
