The Team’s History

Dukes Baseball is a team on the rise. Founded in 2002, the team has seen success in recent years making the playoffs four times in the last six seasons. The team is based in Norfolk, Virginia and plays its home games at Harbor Park. The Dukes are part of the Carolina League and are affiliated with the Chicago White Sox

The team got its start when Norfolk city officials were looking for a way to revitalize the downtown area. They decided to build a new ballpark and attract a minor League Baseball team to play there. Norfolk Tides owner Ken Young agreed to move his team, the Double-A Bowie Baysox, to Norfolk if the city built him a new stadium. The city agreed and Harbor Park opened in 1993.

The Baysox played at Harbor Park for nine seasons before moving to Prince George’s County, Maryland in 2002. Meanwhile, the city of Norfolk was left without a Baseball Team That changed later that year when Peter Kirk, owner of the Single-A Potomac Cannons, announced that he was moving his team to Norfolk and renaming them the Dukes.

Since then, the Dukes have been one of the Carolina League’s most successful teams. They won their first Carolina League championship in 2004 and followed that up with another title in 2007. The ballpark is also home to the Bull City Living history museum, which chronicles the team’s history from its origins in 1902 to present day.
