The Elder Baseball Team is coached by Mark Giesler, who has been with the program for over 20 years. Coach Giesler has led the team to many successful seasons, including a conference championship in 2010 and a division title in 2012.

The History of Elder Baseball

Elder baseball was founded in 1954 by John Bertke, who served as the program’s first Head Coach Under Bertke’s guidance, Elder quickly became one of the premier programs in the Cincinnati area. In his 20 years at the helm, Bertke compiled a 522-183 record and led Elder to eight Greater Catholic League championships.

In 1974, Bertke was succeeded by Gary Vatterode, who would go on to lead Elder to seven GCL titles in his 17 seasons at the helm. Vatterode also guided Elder to its first state championship in 1980.

Elder has won 19 GCL championships and two state titles since its inception. The program has produced numerous Division I college players and professionals, including Major League Baseball All-Stars Joey Votto and Aroldis Chapman.
