Fancam of the NBA Finals JR Smith

On June 8th, 2018, in game one of the NBA Finals Stacey King the television commentator for the Cleveland Cavaliers made a now-famous exclamation. As J.R. Smith attempted a wide open three-pointer with the score tied and only seconds remaining on the clock, King shouted, “He’s got to know! He’s got to know!”

Of course, J.R. Smith didn’t know. The shot clock had already expired, meaning that if he had simply held onto the ball, the Cavaliers would have been awarded another possession and perhaps could have won the game in overtime. Instead, Smith shot the ball and it clanged off the rim. The Cavaliers went on to lose in overtime, and J.R. Smith became a national punchline.

The moment was caught on camera from multiple angles by fans in the stands, and these so-called “fancams” quickly went viral on social media In the days and weeks after the game, there were endless memes and gifs created from these videos, as people joked about J.R. Smith’s mistake.
