What are FHSAA Basketball Districts?

FHSAA Basketball Districts are a way of grouping together schools in similar areas for playoff purposes. The idea is that schools within the same district are more likely to be familiar with each other and have played each other during the regular season which makes for a more fair and competitive Playoff Bracket

In order to be eligible for the playoffs, a team must first compete in and win their district tournament The FHSAA currently offers District Championships in 14 different basketball playoffs Boys Single A through Boys 6A, and Girls Single A through Girls 6A.

The current District Championship structure began with the 2014-2015 season. Prior to that, District Championships were only held in Boys Basketball (Single A-6A) and Girls Basketball (4A-6A). The inclusion of Single A District Championships for both Boys and Girls was a result of growth in the sport at the lower classification levels.

Here is a list of the 14 different district tournaments that are offered by the FHSAA:
Boys Single A – 1A through 5A
Girls Single A – 1A through 5A
Boys 6A
Girls 6A

How are the Districts Determined?

In order for a school to be eligible to participate in the district tournament, the school must have a minimum of 50% of its scheduled games against other members of that district. TheException is for grades 9-12 where a minimum of 40% of games must be against district opponents. A school may play more than the minimum, but not less. If a school does not play the required number of district opponents, it will not be eligible for postseason play.

What is the Purpose of the Districts?

The purpose of the districts is to group schools together that are of similar size and location. This way, schools compete against schools of similar size and location, which leads to more evenly matched games and a more fair competition.

There are 8 district tournaments that take place around the state of Florida. The top 2 teams from each district tournament advance to the regional tournament From there, the winners of the 4 regional tournaments advance to the State Tournament

What are the Different Types of Districts?

In the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA), there are 8 different types of districts.

1. Single-school districts are created when only one school in a county is a member of the FHSAA. This type of district is found mostly in rural counties.

2. Multi-school districts have more than one school in the county which is a member of the FHSAA. This type of district generally has high schools that are close together geographically.

3. Cooperative districts are made up of two or more counties that agree to cooperate with each other for the purposes of creating a district for the schools within those counties. The cooperative agreement must be approved by the Board of Directors of the FHSAA.

4. Conference districts are created when all of the schools in a conference elect to compete together in district tournaments, rather than being placed into districts based on county lines. In order for a conference district to be approved, there must be at least eight schools participating, and those schools must be located within the same general geographical area.

5. Combined districts consist of two or more conferences that agree to combine their conference tournaments into one district tournament. In order for a combined district to be approved, there must be at least 16 schools participating, and those schools must be located within the same general geographical area.

6. Composite districts are created when all of the schools in two or more conferences elect to compete together in district tournaments, and those conferences also agree to combine their conference tournaments into one district tournament. In order for a composite district to be approved, there must be at least 24 schools participating, and those schools must be located within the same general geographical area.

7. Unorganized districts are established when there are not enough member schools within a county (or counties) to justify creating a separate district for those schools only. In this case, those schools become members of an unorganized District that covers all areas of the state not already included in another type of district (Single-School, Multi-School, Cooperative, Conference, Combined or Composite). The term “unorganized” simply means that these member schools do not have their own separate District tournament, but instead compete in Regionals and/or State Series play only. All unorganized Districts are divided into Regions for purposes of determining Regional qualifiers and/or State Series participants..
