The NJSIAA girls basketball season is underway, and there are a number of teams that are off to hot starts. Below is a look at the Top Teams in each of the four classifications, as well as some other teams that are worth keeping an eye on.

Class A
1. Saddle River Day (7-0): The defending State Champions have started the season where they left off, winning all seven of their games by double digits. They are led by senior point guard Ally Carman, who is averaging 18.4 points, 5.1 assists, and 5.6 steals per game.
2. Point Pleasant Beach (6-0): The Garnet Gulls have yet to be seriously tested this season, with their closest margin of victory being 16 points. They are led by senior center Olivia Dabney, who is averaging a double-double with 21.3 points and 12 rebounds per game
3. Rumson-Fair Haven (5-2): The Bulldogs suffered a pair of losses to out-of-state opponents early in the season, but they have rebounded with five straight wins. They are led by senior guard Faith Masonius, who is averaging 15 points per game
4. Bishop Eustace (5-1): The Crusaders’ only loss this season came against nationally ranked St. John Vianney in the opening game of the year. They are led by sophomore guard Emma Waddle, who is averaging 18 points per game

Anna Morris (So., G, Rumson-Fair Haven) — Anna is a versatile player who can shoot from long range or take it to the basket. She averaged 15 points per game last year and led her team to the State Tournament

Kayla Gibbs (Sr., G, Newark Tech) — Kayla is one of the top scorers in the state, averaging over 20 points per game She can score from anywhere on the court and is a great leader for her team.

Carly boyd (Sr., F, Middlesex) — Carly is a physical player who is tough to stop near the basket. She averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds per game last year and will be a force again this season.

1) The Newark West Side high school team has been on a roll lately, upsetting some of the top teams in their conference. They are currently unranked but are definitely one of the Teams to Watch going forward.

2) The East Orange Campus high school team is also unranked but has been having a great season so far. They have already beaten some of the top ranked teams in their conference and are definitely a team to watch out for.

3) The Woodrow Wilson high school team is currently ranked number one in their conference but they have already lost two games this season. They will need to step up their game if they want to remain at the top, but they are definitely a team to watch out for nonetheless.

The top players to Watch in the State Tournament

With the NJSIAA girls Ball State tournament set to tip off this weekend, here’s a look at the top 10 players to watch in the event.

1-Kayla Richardson, Rumson-Fair Haven, Sr., G: One of the top scorers in the Shore Conference averaging 17.8 Points per game Richardson is a diverse player that can shoot from anywhere on the court and has shown the ability to take over games. She had 27 points in a win over St. John Vianney earlier this season.

2-Kate Gardler, Red Bank Catholic Jr., G: An excellent shooter that is averaging 15 points per game for theCaseys. Gardler has started to become more of a playmaker as the season has progressed and is one of the best defenders on one of the stingiest teams in the state. She had 16 points when RBC won at Neptune earlier this season.

3-Destiny Adams, Franklin, So., C: One of the best players in Somerset County averaging a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. Adams is an extremely efficient player that can score inside and out. She had 31 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Bound Brook earlier this season.

4-Angelica Velez, Saddle River Day So., G: A dynamic player that is averaging 18 points, five assists and three steals per game for the Rebels. Velez scored a career-high 30 points in a win over Bergen Tech last month.

5-Kerry Abbey, Manchester Township, Sr., F: The Hawks’ senior leader is averaging a team-best 15 points per game to go along with nine rebounds and three blocks per contest. Abbey scored 19 points when Manchester Township knocked off then No 1-. Toms River North earlier this season.

6-Alexa Willinganam, Neptune, Jr., F: The Scarlet Fliers’ leading scorer at 16 points per game including 22 in a win over Monmouth Regional earlier this season. Willinganam also averages eight rebounds per contest for Neptune which is looking for its first state title since 2006..

7-Symone O’Connor, St. Rose, sr., G/F: The Purple Roses’ leading scorer at 17 points per game including 23 in an overtime loss to rumson fair haven last month.. The NJSIAA girls Ball State Tournament is just around the corner and there are a number of teams that are looking to make a run at the title. Here is a look at some of the top teams to watch in the state tournament

1. Bergen Catholic (27-1) – The Crusaders are the top seed in the North Jersey, Sectional 1 tournament and they have one of the best players in the state in senior point guard Kennedy Crusat. Bergen Catholic will be a tough out for any team in the state tournament

2. St. John Vianney (24-3) – The Lancers are the top seed in the South Jersey, Non-Public A tournament and they are led by one of the best players in the state in senior Guard Kate McClure. St. John Vianney will be a tough out for any team in the state tournament

3. Red Bank Catholic (25-2) – The Caseys are the top seed in the South Jersey, Non-Public B tournament and they feature a balanced attack that is led by senior Forward Erin Ferguson. Red Bank Catholic will be a tough out for any team in the state tournament

4. Ranney School (23-4) – The Panthers are the second seed in the South Jersey, Non-Public B tournament and they feature one of the best players in the state in junior Guard Brianna Valdez. Ranney School will be a tough out for any team in the state tournament

The Top Storylines to Watch in the State Tournament

1. There is a lot of parity in the state this year and any of the top seeds could make a run at the title.
2. Defending champion Ark Tech is loaded again and will be looking to repeat.
3. Girard Point is the top seed in the South Jersey section and will be a force to be reckoned with.
4. Point Pleasant Beach is the top seed in the Central Jersey section and has been playing great basketball lately.
5. Manchester Township is the top seed in North Jersey and has an explosive offense that could carry them far in the tournament.
