Four Takeaways From Texas Basketball’s NCAA Tournament Loss

Texas Basketball’s season came to an end with a loss in the NCAA tournament Here are four takeaways from the game.

1. The Longhorns failed to capitalize on their opportunities
2. Texas couldn’t contain the opposing team’s offense
3. The Longhorns couldn’t generate enough offense of their own
4. Texas ran out of gas in the second half

Texas basketball was one of the most successful programs in the nation this season. They compiled a 29-7 record, won the Big 12 regular season championship, and made it to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament However, their season came to an end with a loss to eventual national runner-up Auburn. Here are four takeaways from Texas’ season:

1) Their youth showed at times: Texas started two freshmen (commitment Will Baker and Courtney Ramey) and two sophomores (Matt Coleman III and Jase Febres) in their Sweet Sixteen game against Auburn. While all four of those players had bright moments during the season, they also experienced some freshman/sophomore struggles against Auburn. They combined for eight turnovers and just 14 points.

2) They lacked a true “star”: Texas was a well-balanced team this season, but they didn’t have that one player who could take over a game and carry them to victory. Against Auburn, they needed someone to step up and make Big Shots when the going got tough, but no one did.

3) They didn’t have enough depth: Injuries limited Texas’ depth this season, and it hurt them against Auburn. When starting forward Jericho Sims got into foul trouble early in the game, there wasn’t anyone on the bench who could adequately replace him. Auburn’s bench outscored Texas’ 25-0.

4) Shaka Smart is still building the program: Shaka Smart is in his fifth season as Head Coach of Texas basketball and he has done a lot of good things with the program. But this loss shows that there’s still work to be done if he wants to take them to the next level.

Texas basketball’s NCAA tournament run came to an end on Sunday night with a loss to Oklahoma in the second round. The Longhorns put up a valiant effort against the Sooners, but ultimately came up short in a close game Here are four takeaways from Texas’ loss.

1) The Longhorns battled, but ultimately came up short against a superior opponent.
2) Texas was inefficient on offense, particularly from beyond the arc.
3) The Longhorns struggled to contain Oklahoma’s dynamic backcourt duo of Buddy Hield and Jordan Woodard.
4) Texas had no answer for Ryan Spangler, who dominated the paint for Oklahoma.

In their loss to TCU in the second round of the NCAA tournament Texas showed some glaring weaknesses that will need to be addressed before next season.

Here are four takeaways from the Longhorns’ disappointing end to the 2017-2018 campaign:

1. Texas needs more consistent scoring from its backcourt
2. The Longhorns need to do a better job of taking care of the ball
3. Texas must get better production from its bench players
4. The Longhorns need to improve their perimeter defense

Texas basketball’s season came to an end on Sunday with a loss to Alabama in the NCAA tournament Here are four takeaways from the Longhorns’ 2019-20 campaign.

1. Texas had a great season, but ultimately fell short of its goals
The Longhorns went 21-10 overall and 12-6 in the Big 12, good for fourth place in the Conference Standings Texas also made it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014, but ultimately lost in the first round. While it wasn’t the ending Texas wanted, the Longhorns had a very successful season overall.

2. Shaka Smart is still the right coach for Texas
Despite the early exit from the NCAA Tournament Shaka Smart remains the right coach for Texas. He’s led the Longhorns to three consecutive winning seasons and has helped develop players like Mo Bamba, Jarrett Allen and Drew Jones Plus, he has a strong recruiting class coming in next season. There’s no reason to believe that Smart won’t continue to have success at Texas.

3. The Longhorns need more nt play from their guards
One of the biggest issues for Texas this season was inconsistency from its guards. Matt Coleman and Jase Febres had some great games, but they also had some games where they disappeared offensively. The Longhorns need more production from their backcourt if they’re going to take that next step under Smart.

4. Texas has a bright future thanks to its young core
Even though the Longhorns didn’t make a deep run in the NCAA tournament this year, there’s still plenty of reason for optimism going forward thanks toTexas’ young core of players. Coleman, Febres and Jones are all returning next season, as is big man Jericho Sims. Additionally, five-star recruit Greg Brown will be joining the team next year as well. With that young nucleus in place, Texas should be back in contention for a conference title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament next season.

Texas basketball’s season came to an end on Sunday Night with a loss to Alabama in the NCAA Tournament Here are four takeaways from the game.

1. The Longhorns need to be better on defense.

Texas allowed Alabama to shoot 50 percent from the field and 42 percent from three-point range The Longhorns simply couldn’t keep up with the Crimson Tide’s offense.

2. Myck Kabongo needs to be more consistent.

Kabongo was one of the best players on the court for Texas, but he was also very inconsistent. He finished with 19 points, but he also had six turnovers. Kabongo needs to cut down on his turnovers next season if he wants to be one of the best players in the country.

3. Texas needs more size inside.

The Longhorns were outrebounded 36-24 by Alabama and they didn’t have an answer for the Crimson Tide’s big men inside. Texas needs to add some size and strength inside if they want to compete with the best teams in the country next season.

4. This loss should motivate Texas for next season.

Despite this disappointing loss, Texas has a lot to be excited about for next season. With Kabongo, J’Covan Brown, and Sheldon McClellan returning, the Longhorns will have one of the best offenses in the country next season. If they can improve their defense and add some size inside, they could be a very dangerous team next year.

In their first NCAA tournament game in over a decade, the Texas Longhorns fell to the Maryland Terrapins 79-74. Here are four takeaways from the loss.

1. The Longhorns need to be more consistent on offense if they want to make a run in the tournament.
2. Defense was an issue for Texas, as they allowed Maryland to shoot 50 percent from the field.
3. Maryland’s big men were too much for Texas, as they outrebounded the Longhorns 43-34.
4.Texas will need to regroup and refocus if they want to make a run in the tournament next year.

1. The Longhorns finished the season 20-14 overall and 10-8 in the Big 12.
2. Texas went 0-5 in games decided by five points or fewer this season.
3. The Longhorns were just 4-10 against teams that made the NCAA Tournament field of 68.
4. Shaka Smart’s team will lose seniors Dylan Osetkowski and Kerwin Roach II, but returns Key Players like Matt Coleman III, Jase Febres and Courtney Ramey.

Texas basketball’s NCAA tournament run came to an end on Sunday with a loss to Indiana in the round of 32. Here are four takeaways from the Longhorns’ season:

1) Texas was one of the most improved teams in the country

After finishing last season with a sub-.500 record, the Longhorns made huge strides in 2019-20. Texas finished 21-10 overall and 12-6 in the Big 12, earning a No. 10 seed in the NCAA tournament

2) The Longhorns were hurt by injuries

Texas was thinned out by injuries early in the season, and then lost star player Jaxson Hayes to a Knee Injury midway through conference play The Longhorns battled through adversity and still had a chance to win against Indiana, but ultimately came up short.

3) Shaka Smart is still looking for his first NCAA Tournament win at Texas

Smart has now been at Texas for six seasons, and while he’s led the Longhorns to three NCAA Tournament appearances he’s yet to win a game in the Big Dance. This is something that will continue to hang over Smart until he can finally get over the hump.
