Greensboro has a long and storied history when it comes to baseball. The city has been home to many professional and semi-professional teams over the years, dating back to the 19th century. The Greensboro Colored Blackhawks were one of the first all-black professional teams in the country, and they played their home games at Dudley Field. The team was formed in 1909 and played in the Negro Leagues until they folded in 1931.
In 1937, the Greensboro Patriots were formed and were a part of the Piedmont League. The team played their home games at World War Memorial Stadium, which was built in 1926 and is still standing today. The Patriots only lasted for two seasons before the league disbanded due to World War II.
After the war, Greensboro rejoined the ranks of minor League Baseball with the Greensboro Red Sox who were a part of the Carolina League from 1945-1955. The team played their home games at World War Memorial Stadium before moving to Denton Field for their final season.
The city would be without a team for nearly a decade before the Greensboro Yankees arrived in 1963. They then moved up again to the Triple-A National League and became an affiliate of the New York Yankees The team played their home games at Grady Hatton Field before moving to Beasley Field at Wake Forest University in 1977.
