The team got its start in 1976 as the Knoxville Sox, an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox After two years in Knoxville, the team moved to Wausau, Wisconsin, and became the Wausau Mets. In 1982, the team moved again, this time to Savannah, Georgia, and became the Savannah Mets. The team was then purchased by San Francisco Giants owner Bob Lurie in 1987 and moved to Augusta, where they have been ever since.

Over the course of their history, the Augusta Greenjackets have won five league championships (1988, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2000) and have had nineteen players who went on to play Major League Baseball Some of the more notable alumni include Matt Williams Jason Schmidt, Tim Lincecum Madison Bumgarner Buster Posey Brandon Crawford and Joe Panik.
