The team was founded in 1946 as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, a members of the National Basketball League (NBL). The franchise moved to Milwaukee in 1951, and changed their name to the Hawks. The Hawks won the NBL championship in 1951. In 1952, the Hawks joined the NBA as part of the NBA’s expansion into the Midwest.

The Milwaukee Hawks were a professional basketball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Hawks competed in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1951 to 1955. The franchise was created as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, an expansion team, and joined the NBA with the 1951–52 season. In 1953, the Hawks relocated to Milwaukee to become the Milwaukee Hawks.
The team ran into financial difficulties after failing to make the playoffs during their first three seasons in Milwaukee and were sold to a group of Chicago businessmen in 1955. The new owners promptly moved the team back to Illinois, where they played for one more season as the Chicago Packers before moving again, this time to St. Louis, where they were renamed the St. Louis Hawks.
