It’s time for college Basketball season and the Texas Longhorns are looking to make a run at the NCAA title. Here’s a preview of what to expect from this year’s team.
The Team
The Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team represents The University of Texas at Austin in NCAA Division I intercollegiate men’s basketball competition. The Longhorns currently compete in the Big 12 Conference.
The Schedule
The 2017-2018 season is finally here! conference play will start in just a couple of weeks, when the ‘Horns host Iowa State on December 3rd. Here’s a look at the full schedule, so you can start making your plans to attend some games!

The college basketball season is upon us and that means it’s time for the Texas Longhorns to take the court! One of the things that make College Basketball so special are the rivalries. Here are some of the Longhorns’ biggest rivals:

The Venues
The Venues
This season, the Longhorns will be playing their home games at the Erwin Center, Frank Erwin Special Events Center, and Dell Diamond.
The Frank Erwin Special Events Center is located on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin. With a seating capacity of 17,000, it is the largest arena in Central Texas. The Erwin Center is also home to the Texas Longhorns men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as the women’s volleyball team.
Dell Diamond is the home of the Round Rock Express, a Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers The stadium has a capacity of more than 10,000 and is located in Round Rock, Texas.
The Express play their home games at Dell Diamond from April through September.
The History
The Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team represents The University of Texas at Austin in NCAA Division I intercollegiate men’s basketball competition. The Longhorns currently compete in the Big 12 Conference.
The University of Texas began varsity intercollegiate competition in men’s basketball in 1906. Seven years later, Fred Etheridge was appointed head basketball coach a position he would hold for the next 21 years. In 1938, Under Etheridge, the Longhorns shared the SWC Championship with Rice and Baylor.
Etheridge retired after the 1938-39 season, and Tex Warburton assumed head coaching duties from 1939 to 1942. In 1942, Warburton led Texas to the NCAA Final Four. In 1947,”The Talking Horns”, as they were called due to their outstanding play-by-play radio broadcasts, won another SWC Championship under new Head Coach Jack Gray.
From 1947-1950, Gray guided Texas to an impressive 80-16 (.833) record that included three NCAA tournament bids and an NIT bid in 1949.

The Traditions
Basketball season is one of the most anticipated times of the year for fans of the University of Texas at Austin. The excitement starts weeks before the first game as students and alumni begin making preparations. Some of the most popular traditions include painting one’s face in team colors donning Longhorn-themed clothing, and flying the state flag at home games
One tradition that is unique to Texas Longhorns basketball is the “Hook ’em” hand gesture. This gesture is made by holding up the index and pinky fingers while folding down the middle and ring fingers. The thumb is then extended outwards to form a longhorn symbol. This tradition started in 1955 and has been adopted by fans of all ages.
Another popular tradition amongst Longhorn fans is attending a “Midnight Madness” event. These events are held on the Friday before the first official game of the season and usually involve player introductions, scrimmages, and other fun activities. Midnight Madness events are open to the public and usually attract a large crowd of enthusiastic fans.
