Every year, the National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Game is played in February between the Eastern and Western Conference all-star teams. This game is a highly anticipated event among NBA fans, as it features some of the league’s best players. But how do NBA players become All-Stars?

All-Star game origins

The first official All-Star game was held in 1951 as a way to raise money for the then-struggling National Basketball League. The game featured some of the biggest names in the sport at the time, including George Mikan, Bob Cousy, and Dolph Schayes. It was a huge success, and NLB president Maurice Podoloff decided to make it an annual event.

In 1954, the game was held in Boston Garden, and Cousy was named MVP after scoring 23 points. The following year, the game was moved to Madison Square Garden in New York City, where it has been held ever since. In 1957, Cousy again took home MVP honors after leading the East to a victory with 20 points and 10 assists.

By this time, the All-Star game had become a must-see event for basketball fans all over the world. In 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scored an astonishing 42 points to lead the West to victory, while Oscar Robertson put up a triple-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. This would start a trend of players putting up big numbers in the All-Star game that continues to this day.

How Players are Selected

The selection process for the All-Star game is quite simple. The two best players from each conference are chosen to be starters. Then, the remaining 14 players are chosen by the head coaches from each conference.

The fan vote is done entirely online on the NBA’s official website. Anybody with an account can submit their ballot once per day up until one week before the All-Star game. The website tallies all of the votes and releases an update every couple of weeks leading up to Selection Sunday. On Selection Sunday, the league announces all 14 All-Star starters — the 10 starters with the most fan votes plus two backcourt players and two frontcourt players with the most combined votes from fans, players, and media members respectively.

All-Star game reserves

Players are selected by a vote of current NBA head coaches. Each coach selects two guards, three frontcourt players and two players regardless of position. Coaches are not allowed to vote for players from their own team. If a player is unable to participate, the NBA commissioner selects a replacement.

In order to be eligible for selection, a player must have competed in at least half of his team’s games through the Thursday preceding the All-Star weekend.
