Whitworth was born in West Monroe, Louisiana. He attended West Monroe High School, where he played for the West Monroe Rebels high school football team. Whitworth played college football at Louisiana State University from 2002 to 2005. As a sophomore, he started all 13 games at left tackle and helped lead LSU to an SEC Championship and BCS National Championship.[3] As a junior, he started 13 games at left tackle and was named a first-team All-SEC selection by NFL draft analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Scouts Inc..[4][5] After his junior season, he decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2006 NFL Draft.[6][7]

In 2009, Bengals offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski moved Whitworth to left tackle to replace Levi Jones, who had been placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. The move was made in order to keep the offensive line stable and to protect quarterback Carson Palmer’s blind side; Jones was eventually released by the team in 2010. Whitworth excelled in his new position, allowing only two and a half sacks over the course of the season. He was also named a team captain for the first time in his career.
