NBA’s Plans for the Season

Playoffs
The NBA playoffs are a best-of-seven elimination tournament annually held after the NBA’s regular season to determine the league’s champion. The tournaments were first held in 1947. Finals 1-2 were played in Divisional playoff format. The Divisional playoffs were first introduced in 1949. The 1949 Finals were the first to be played under the 3-2-2-1-1 format, which is still used today. starting from 1970, all games are played under this format.
The playoffs are preceded by a 82-game regular season (or 41 games for teams who qualify for the playoffs through a conference’s tournament). Each team plays an opponent in a best-of-seven series, with home court advantage going to teams with better regular season records. If one team ties anothers’ series record, then home court advantage goes to the team with the better head-to-head record during the regular season. From 2014, home court advantage can no longer be determined by regular season record alone, as it could result in team(s) with inferior records receiving home court advantage; instead, it is determined by whichever team earned more wins against opposing teams with .500 or better records. Also since 2014, tiebreakers are no longer based on head-to-head results; instead they are based on whether one team won its division (if both teams did not win their division, or if they play in different divisions), or if one team had a better record against teams .500 or better regardless of division (this criterion is commonly referred to as having “the better conference record”).
Other Leagues’ Plans
The NBA is still in the process of finalizing their plans for the 2020-2021 season, but other leagues have already announced how many games they will be playing. The NHL will be playing a 56 game season, while the MLB will be playing a 60 game season.
NHL
The NHL is planning to have a 56-game regular season schedule beginning on Jan. 13, 2021. Each team will play its divisional opponents eight times and the other conference teams twice.
MLB
The MLB is reportedly planning to start its season in May and play approximately 143 games, down from the usual 162.
