How Many Players On A Major League Baseball Roster?
Contents
A major league baseball roster has 25 active players. These players are typically a mix of veteran stars, young up-and-comers, and role players who contribute in specific ways.
The 40-Man Roster
In baseball, the 40-man roster is the list of players who are eligible to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the team during the current season. As of 2021, the roster limit is 40 active players, with no limit on the number of inactive, disabled list, or minor-league players.
The 25-Man Roster
In baseball, the active roster is a list of 25 players who are eligible to play in games for their team during a given season. These players make up the core of each team and typically include the team’s best hitters and pitchers.
The active roster may be supplemented throughout the season by additional players, who are typically called up from the team’s minor league affiliate when needed. These players are not eligible to play in postseason games.
The 40-man roster is a list of all players who are under contract with a major league team or who are on the team’s reserve list. A player on the 40-man roster is eligible to be called up to the major leagues at any time during the season and is also eligible for postseason play.
The 60-Day Injured List
Major League Baseball teams are allowed to have up to 40 players on their active roster at any given time. Of those 40 players, 25 are allowed to be active for each game. The other 15 players are considered inactive and cannot play in that particular game.
Players who are injured and require time to recover may be placed on the 60-day Injured List. This allows teams to keep their roster at 40 players while the injured player recovers. Players on the 60-day Injured List do not count towards the 25-man active roster limit.
The Restricted List
The Restricted List is a list of players who are ineligible to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) for reasons generally related to conduct. The Commissioner’s Office placed players on this list, commonly known as the “UniformPlayer’s Contract”, at the request of MLB clubs.
A player who is serving a suspension unrelated to drug use is not eligible for the Restricted List. For example, if a player is suspended for fighting, he would go on the Ineligible List, not the Restricted List.
The Suspended List
The suspended list (often called the restricted list in Minor League Baseball) is a list of players who are not eligible to play in games for a period of time. This is usually because they have been suspended for violating team rules or league policies. A player can be on the suspended list for an indefinite period of time, but they must be removed from the 40-man roster while they are on it.
The most common reason for a player to be placed on the suspended list is because of a failed drug test. In 2015, there were 82 players suspended for violating the league’s drug policy. Other reasons for suspension can include alcohol abuse, domestic violence, and gambling.
Players on the suspended list do not count against a team’s active roster limit, but they can still accrue Major League service time while on it.
