There are four teams left in the American League playoffs. The Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, and Los Angeles Angels all have a chance to make it to the World Series.
Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox are one of the nation’s oldest professional sports franchises, and they have won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, including their first in over 86 years.
Houston Astros
The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL). The Astros have played their home games at Minute Maid Park since 2000.
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City; the other club is the National League (NL)’s New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed as the “Yankees” in 1913.
Oakland Athletics
The Oakland Athletics are an American professional baseball team based in Oakland, California. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division. The team plays its home games at the Oakland Coliseum. They have won nine World Series championships.
National League
The Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers are the only two teams remaining in the National League.
Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves are a professional baseball team located in Atlanta, Georgia. They are members of the National League (NL) East division in Major League Baseball (MLB). The Braves play their home games at SunTrust Park, located in Cumberland, Georgia.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers are an American professional baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League West division. Established in 1884 in Brooklyn, New York, the team moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. They played for four seasons at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before moving to their current home of Dodger Stadium in 1962.
Milwaukee Brewers
As of October 1st, the Milwaukee Brewers are still in the running for the National League title. As of right now, they are behind the Chicago Cubs by 2.5 games, but they have a chance to clinch the division title if they win their remaining games and the Cubs lose theirs.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates are a professional baseball team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. The Pirates play their home games at PNC Park; the team previously played at Forbes Field and Three Rivers Stadium, the latter of which was named after its location near the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers.
The franchise joined the NL in its eighth season in 1887 and was competitive early on, winning three NL titles from 1901 to 1903, playing in the inaugural World Series in 1903 and again in 1909. The team’s fortunes declined throughout the 1970s and 1980s; they qualified for three more post-season appearances—all losses—while compiling a losing record every year from 1993 to 2012. The Pirates suffered a string of 13 consecutive losing seasons from 1993 to 2005; this is largely considered Major League Baseball’s longest-running streak of futility. The franchise’s streak of 20 consecutive losing seasons from 2001 to 2020 is MLB’s longest active streak by years. They had winning records in 2013 and 2014, helping bring about a turn-around for the franchise that culminated with their first division title since 1992—and their first wild card berth since 2013—in 2013, which resulted in their first ML postseason appearance since 19
