MLB Teams

Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball organization, the oldest of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. A total of 30 teams play in the National League (NL) and American League (AL), with 15 teams in each league.

American League

The American League of Major League Baseball (MLB) is one of two leagues that make up the organization. It was founded in 1901 as the Western League, a minor league that eventually became major league. In 1900, an ownership group led by Chicago White Sox owner Charles Comiskey moved the Western League to the American Lakes region and renamed it the American League. The new league was not affiliated with the National League and therefore had no territorial rights. This allowed teams to move into any city without worry about upsetting another franchise.

National League

The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, commonly known as the National League (NL), is the older of two leagues constituting Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Canada, and the world’s oldest current professional team sports league. Founded on February 2, 1876, to replace the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NAPBBP) of 1871–1875, the NL is sometimes called the Senior Circuit, in contrast to MLB’s other league, the American League, which was founded 25 years later.

Minor League Teams

There are seven minor league baseball teams in the United States. These teams are the Triple-A affiliate of Major League Baseball team. The teams are the Albuquerque Isotopes, Colorado Springs Sky Sox, Memphis Redbirds, Nashville Sounds, New Orleans Zephyrs, Oklahoma City Dodgers, and Reno Aces.

Triple-A

In order to be eligible for the Triple-A World Series, a team must first win their league championship. Double-A

The Double-A level minor league baseball consists of 30 teams in eastern and southern United States as well as a few teams in western Canada. There are three leagues at this level, the Eastern League, Southern League, and Texas League. Unlike Triple-A and Single-A baseball, there is no “national” championship for Double-A baseball teams.

Single-A

Single-A is the lowest level of play in Minor League Baseball. There are three Single-A leagues in baseball: the High-A West, the High-A East, and the Low-A Midwest. There are also a number of short season and rookie leagues that operate at the Single-A level.

Players at this level are typically 19-22 years old. They are either recent high school graduates or college players who have not yet been drafted by a Major League team. Founded in 1993, it is the oldest currently running independent baseball league. The league operates in cities not served by Major or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either organization.

The Frontier League began with six teams in 1993, all of which were located in Illinois. It has since expanded to 17 teams, 14 of which are located in the United States and three of which are located in Canada.

Winter League Teams

Arizona Fall League

The Arizona Fall League (AFL) is a professional baseball league that was founded in 1992. The league is composed of six teams, each affiliated with a Major League Baseball team. The teams play a 28-game schedule from mid-September to mid-November.

Dominican Winter League

The Dominican Winter League (Spanish: Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana) is a professional baseball league in the Dominican Republic, founded in 1955. It is the successor of three earlier leagues, the original Dominican Professional Baseball League (1912–1951), the Dominican Summer Baseball League (1952–53), and the Winter Baseball League (1954).

The league currently consists of six teams, divided into two divisions. The regular season runs from early October to late December, followed by a playoff round between the division champions to determine a league champion. Although classified as a winter league, games are played during the day in order to avoid conflict with Major League Baseball’s (MLB) World Series.

As of 2019, 283 former or current MLB players have participated in at least one Dominican Winter League season. The most successful team has been the Estrellas Orientales, who have won eight championships.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

The Mexican Pacific Winter League (MPWL) is a professional baseball league located in northwest Mexico. The league was founded in 1945 with six teams and has since expanded to ten teams. The MPWL is the largest winter league in Latin America and is one of three winter leagues affiliated with Major League Baseball (MLB).

The MPWL season runs from October to December, with each team playing 60 games. The top four teams advance to the playoffs, which are single-elimination games leading up to the championship series.

MLB teams have been sending players to the MPWL since the 1960s, and the league has served as a development platform for many future MLB stars. College Teams

As of the 2019 season, there are 245 Division I college baseball teams in the United States. This is down from a peak of 291 teams in 2014. The majority of these teams are members of the NCAA’s Division I, with 129 teams coming from the SEC, ACC, Big 12, Pac-12, and Big Ten conferences.

NCAA Division I

There are currently 329 NCAA Division I baseball teams. Division I baseball is the highest level of collegiate baseball in the United States. These teams are typically the top programs in their respective conferences, and they compete for the annual College World Series championship.

NCAA Division II

Division II is an intermediate-level division of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It offers an alternative to both the large and multiclass system of Division I and to the scholarship-free environment of Division III.

Division II schools are typically smaller public universities and many private institutions. They generally have a broader base of alumni and ongoing financial support from the school as a whole. NCAA Division III

There are 221 NCAA Division III baseball teams in the United States. NCAA Division III schools range in size from just over 1,000 students to over 35,000 students, and they are located in almost every state. The vast majority of Division III baseball players do not receive athletic scholarships, but many schools offer academic scholarships and other forms of financial aid.
