How To Measure For the Perfect Baseball Hat: Measuring your noggin for the perfect baseball hat is easy. Just follow these simple steps and you’ll be sure to find a hat that fits great and looks good, too!
The head
The baseball hat is an American icon. It is present at every game and worn by every player. It is a part of the uniform and it has a specific function. The baseball hat protects the player’s head from the sun and the rain. It also keeps the hair out of the player’s face so they can see the ball. Measuring for the perfect baseball hat is important so that it fits well and performs its function.
Use a flexible measuring tape
To find your hat size, use a flexible measuring tape. Place the tape where you would like the band of your hat to sit on your head, typically about an inch above your eyebrow. Wrap the tape around your head, being careful not to pull too tight or allow too much slack, until the tape overlaps itself. Make a note of where the tape meets and measure the distance with a ruler. This measurement is your hat size!
Measure the circumference of your head
To find your hat size, measure the circumference of your head where you would like the base of the hat to sit using a flexible tape measure. If you don’t have a flexible tape measure, you can also use a string and then measure the string with a ruler. Once you have your measurement, refer to the size chart below to find your corresponding hat size. If your measurement falls between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size.
Size Chart:
Circumference (in.) Hat Size (US)
20 1/2″ 6 3/4
20 7/8″ 6 7/8
21 1/4″ 7
21 5/8″ 7 1/8
22″ 7 1/4
22 3/8″ 7 3/8
22 3/4″ 7 1/2
The height
To find the perfect baseball hat, you need to take two measurements: the circumference of your head, and the height of your head. The height measurement is simple: just stand up straight and use a tape measure to find the distance from the top of your head to the bottom of your chin.
Measure from the center of your forehead
To find your hat size, measure the distance around your head just above your ears. Start in the middle of your forehead and wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of your head, just above your ears. If you don’t have a flexible measuring tape, you can use a string and then measure the string with a flat ruler. Once you have your measurement, refer to the size chart below to find your hat size.
If you’re between sizes or if you have a high forehead, choose the larger size.
Measure from the top of your head
To find your hat size, measure the circumference of your head where you would like the hat to sit using a flexible measuring tape.
Place the tape around your head about 1/2″ above your ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head. The number where the tape meets itself is your hat size. If you are between sizes, choose the next largest size.
The brim
The brim is the part of the baseball hat that goes around the edge of the hat. The brim can be flat or curved. If you have a curved brim, you will want to measure from the center of the curve to the edge. If you have a flat brim, you will want to measure from the center of the brim to the edge.
Measure from the edge of the brim to the top of your head
To find your hat size, measure the circumference of your head where you would like the brim of the hat to sit. If you don’t have a flexible tape measure, you can use a piece of string and then measure the string with a ruler. Once you have your measurement, refer to the size chart below to find your hat size.
Size Chart:
Head Circumference (in inches) Hat Size
20 6 3/4
20 1/2 6 7/8
21 7
21 1/2 7 1/8
22 7 1/4
22 1/2 7 3/8
23 7 1/2
Measure from the edge of the brim to the center of your forehead
To find your hat size, measure your head about an inch above your eyebrows where your hat will rest. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tight, and round up to the nearest half-inch. If you fall between sizes, order the larger size for a comfortable fit.
When you try on a baseball cap, pay attention to how the brim feels. If it’s too wide or narrow, it won’t give you the look or protection you want. The brim should extend about 2-3 inches beyond your forehead on all sides and end at least an inch above your eyebrows in front.
