In 1953, the first professional basketball team in Huntsville was formed. The team, known as the Redstone Rockets, was a member of the newly formed Alabama State Basketball League The team enjoyed moderate success during its short time in operation, winning one League Championship

The Rockets ceased operations in 1957, but basketball in Huntsville continued to grow at the grassroots level. In 1963, a new professional team was formed, this time called the Huntsville Hawks. The Hawks joined the newly formed South Eastern Basketball league and once again enjoyed moderate success, winning one League Championship

The Hawks ceased operations in 1967, but basketball in Huntsville again continued to grow at the grassroots level. In 1971, a new professional team was formed, this time called the Huntsville Stars. The Stars joined the newly formed American Basketball Association, and enjoyed great success, winning two league championships.

The Stars ceased operations in 1975, but basketball in Huntsville once again continued to grow at the grassroots level. In 1979, a new professional team was formed, this time called the Huntsville Flight. The Flight joined the newly forming Continental Basketball Association and enjoyed moderate success during its short time in operation.

The Flight ceased operations in 1981, but basketball in Huntsville yet again continued to grow at the grassroots level. In 1985, a new professional team was formed called the Huntsville Force. The Force joined the World Basketball League (WBL), and enjoyed moderate success during its two years of operation
