Introduction to Lakeland Baseball
Lakeland Baseball is more than just a game. It’s a place for young men to learn about teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship. For many players, it’s also a stepping stone to a successful career in professional baseball
Founded in 2008, Lakeland Baseball is a youth development organization that provides opportunities for players ages 7-18 to participate in organized baseball games and tournaments. We are committed to developing the skills and character of our players, and helping them reach their full potential as student-athletes.
We offer two levels of play: developmental (ages 7-12) and competitive (ages 13-18). Our developmental program is designed to introduce the Game of Baseball to young players and help them develop the skills they need to be successful at the competitive level. Our competitive program is for players who are ready to take their game to the next level. We offer two seasons of competitive play spring (March-May) and fall (September-November).
Players who participate in our competitive program have the opportunity to showcase their talents at our annual tournament, the Lakeland Baseball Classic which attracts hundreds of college and professional scouts from all over the country. Dozens of our players have gone on to play college or Professional Baseball including four who have been drafted by Major League Baseball teams.
Whether your child is just starting out in baseball or has been playing for years, Lakeland Baseball has a place for them. Come grow with us!

The history of Lakeland Baseball
Lakeland Baseball has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. The league was founded in 1885 as the Lakeland Amateur Athletic Association. The league’s first game was played on April 28, 1886 between the Lakeland Athletic Club and the Highland Park Athletic Club. The game was played at Highland Park and ended in a tie, 2-2.
The league became very popular in the early years and grew to include teams from all over Michigan. In 1887, the league expanded to include teams from Ohio and Indiana. In 1888, the league became known as the Lakeland Professional Athletic Association and began charging players for their participation.
The league continued to grow in popularity and by 1890, it was one of the largest professional baseball leagues in the country. In 1893, the league expanded to include teams from Canada and soon became known as the National League
Despite its success, the league folded in 1898 due to financial difficulties. It was not until 1902 that another professional baseball team came to Lakeland when the Detroit Tigers moved their spring training operation here.
The Tigers trained at Henley Field until 1917 when they moved to Concentration Camp Winebarger (now Tigertown) during World War I. Baseball would not return to Henley Field until 1920 when it became home to a new team in the Florida State League, known as the Lakeland Highlanders (later renamed the Pilots).
The Pilots would call Henley Field home until 1963 when they moved to Connie Mack Stadium. The stadium, which seated 4,000 fans, was demolished in 1986 and is now occupied by a shopping center.
In 1966, another Florida State League team moved to Lakeland and took on the name of the Pilots. This team would play at Tigertown until 1972 when it was replaced by a new team in
