The History of Baseball Stamps

The United States Postal Service has been issuing baseball stamps since 1952, when it released a set of three commemorative stamps featuring Babe Ruth Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb. Since then, the USPS has released several more stamp sets honoring America’s Favorite Pastime

Here are some of the most popular baseball stamps issued by the USPS:

The Legends of Baseball Stamp Set (2013): This set features 18 legendary players, including Hank Aaron Roberto Clemente Nolan Ryan Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays.

The Baseball All-Stars Stamp Set (2000): This set features 20 of the greatest players in baseball history including Mickey Mantle Ted Williams Hank Aaron Roberto Clemente and Willie Mays.

The Major League Baseball All-Stars Stamp Set (1998): This set features 20 of the greatest players in baseball history from both the American and National Leagues. Players include Yogi Berra Hank Aaron Bob Gibson Sandy Koufax and Reggie Jackson

The Negro League Baseball Stamp Set (1994): This set features 16 Great players from the Negro Leagues, including Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, Oscar Charleston, and Buck Leonard.

The Greatest baseball players of All Time

The United States Postal Service has been honoring America’s favorite pastime since 1952 when it released the first “legends of baseball” stamp series. This year, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Negro Leagues, 10 new stamps featuring some of the greatest players in baseball history were released. The nominees for the series were decided by a public vote, and the stamps were revealed at a ceremony at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City Missouri.

The 10 players featured on the stamps are: Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell, Oscar Charleston, Rube Foster, Ray Dandridge, Judy Johnson, Monarchs team owner J.L. Wilkinson, Effa Manley, and “Smokey” Joe Williams These players broke barriers and made history both on and off the field. They are true legends of baseball and deserve to be honored with this prestigious stamp series.

The Most Memorable Baseball Stamp Moments

In 2001, the United States Postal Service (USPS) commemorated one of America’s favorite pastimes with a set of five stamps depicting famous moments in baseball history The stamps were released in conjunction with Major League Baseball’s All-Star game which was held that year in Seattle, Washington.

--Boston Red Sox player Ted Williams hitting a home run off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Preacher Roe in the 1941 World Series

The most difficult baseball stamp to find is the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle The Mantle stamp was put out as a promotional item by Topps and was only available by mailing in a request form that was included in five-cent packs of Topps baseball cards Because the form had to be returned to Topps, it’s estimated that only a few hundred of these stamps were ever distributed, making it the rarest baseball stamp in existence.

Other rare stamps include the 1948 Bowman Yogi Berra (estimated value: $5,000), the 1954 Red Heart Willie Mays ($4,000), and the 1951 Bowman Stan Musial ($3,500).
