The legacy:

The legacy:

On November 19, 1998, in a game against the San Antonio Spurs Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant made a self-proclaimed “impossible” shot. From just inside the half-court line, with a defender in his face, Kobe let loose a wild heave that somehow found nothing but net. The shot was significant for several reasons. First, at the time it was the longest shot made in an NBA game Second, it proved to be a turning point in Kobe’s career; after that game, his confidence skyrocketed and he became one of the league’s best players. Finally, the shot helped cement Kobe’s reputation as one of the greatest shooters of all time.

The analysis:

There are a lot of records in basketball — some (like most points in a game) that will probably never be broken, and others (like most 3-pointers in a season) that seem to fall every year. But there’s one record that seems unbreakable: the longest made shot in Basketball History

The shot was made by David Kalb, then a senior at Keene high school in New Hampshire. Kalb made the shot on May 12, 2001, during Keene’s annual alumni game. His setup was simple: he took the ball from Half Court dribbled twice, and let it fly. The shot swished through the net without touching the rim.

Kalb’s shot was officially measured at 91 feet, 9 inches. That’s almost 27 meters! For comparison, the average NBA player is about 6 feet tall (2 meters). That means Kalb’s shot was about four times as long as the average player is tall.

Of course, there’s more to making a shot than just the length. Kalb’s shot also had perfect backspin and perfect trajectory. If the angle had been different or the spin had been off, the shot wouldn’t have gone in.

Still, it’s an amazing feat, and one that may never be matched.

The comparison:

In 2016, Canadian-American basketball player Lily James set the world record for the longest basketball shot ever made. The shot was made from an astounding 109 feet 9 inches (33.63 meters) away from the basket.

To put that into perspective, the average NBA player is only 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 meters) tall, meaning that even the tallest player in the league would have to stand on top of another player to make a shot from where James was standing.

In order to make a shot from that distance, James had to put remarkable spin on the ball. This gave it the lift needed to carry it more than 33 meters through the air and into the basket.

While there have been other shots made from further away, none have had the same level of difficulty or perfection as Lily James’.
