The Loomis Chaffee Basketball Program A Brief History

Loomis Chaffee is a college preparatory school located in Windsor, Connecticut. The school was founded in 1914 by Frank Loomis and has an enrollment of about 560 students. The school’s Basketball Program began in the early 1920s, but the team did not gain national prominence until the 1950s under the leadership of Head Coach Alvan Duerr. Duerr led the team to six New England championships and was named National Coach of the Year in 1957.

The program fell on hard times after Duerr’s retirement in 1967, but experienced a resurgence in the late 1990s under head coach Mike Walsh. Walsh led the team to three consecutive New England prep school Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class A tournament appearances from 1998 to 2000, culminating in a berth in the 2000 NEPSAC Class A Championship game

The program has continued to build on its success over the past decade, winning four consecutive NEPSAC Class A titles from 2013 to 2016 under current Head Coach Jesse Todd. The team has also produced several Division I college players, most notably Alex Oriakhi ’09, who won an NCAA championship with the University of Connecticut in 2011.

Fisher is assisted by two former Division I players: Tom Sweeney and Matt O’Connor. Sweeney played at Boston College from 2006-2010, where he was a member of two NCAA tournament teams. O’Connor played at Dartmouth College from 2011-2015, where he was a four-year starter and helped lead the team to an Ivy League championship as a senior.

The team also qualified for the NEPSAC Class A tournament for the first time since 2011. In 2018-2019, the team took another step forward, finishing with a record of 20-4 and winning their first NEPSAC Class A tournament game in eight years.
