locker room Talk
The term “locker room talk” is defined as “casual or boastful conversation, often lewd or sexually explicit, engaged in by men, typically in a locker room” (Dictionary.com). It is commonly used among male athletes as a way to bond with their teammates and build camaraderie.
Locker room talk can be crude, vulgar, and misogynistic, but it is not always sexual in nature. It can be about sports, women, work, family, friends, or any other topic. The conversation is usually lighthearted and meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
However, when the conversation does turn sexual, it can be degrading and objectifying towards women. It can foster an environment that is unsafe for women and reinforces the idea that they are nothing more than sex objects.
Locker room talk can have a negative impact on both men and women. It can make women feel uncomfortable and unwelcome in the Locker Room and it can teach men that it is acceptable to treat women as objects. If you overhear locker room talk that makes you uncomfortable, speak up! Let your teammates know that this kind of talk is not acceptable.
