The first team to win the tournament was Pontiac Northern, who defeated Detroit Catholic Central in the Championship game Since then, the tournament has expanded to include 16 teams, and has been won by a variety of schools from across the state.
Some of the most successful teams in MHSSAA history include Birmingham Brother Rice who have won the tournament 9 times; Warren DeLaSalle, who have won 8 times; and Grand Ledge who have won 5 times. Other notable teams include East Lansing who have made it to the final game 3 times in the last 5 years but have not yet won a championship; and Ann Arbor Pioneer who made it to the final game for the first time in 2018 but lost to Warren DeLaSalle.

3. Oxford (20-6) – The Chargers are another team that has been near the top of the state rankings for several years now. They have a great mix of experience and youth and they always seem to find a way to win when it matters most. They will be one of the favorites to win it all this year.
4. Brandon (21-5) – The Bulldogs are coming off a trip to the state championship game last year, where they fell just short against Oxford. They have a talented group of players back this year and they will be looking to take that next step and win it all this season.
5. Tupelo (19-8) – The Golden Wave has been one of the most improved teams in recent years making it all the way to the semi-final round of the playoffs last year before falling to eventual champion Oxford. They have a lot of talent back this year and they will be looking to make another deep run in the playoffs
