The future of Brother Rice baseball

The future of Brother Rice Baseball remains bright despite the graduation of several Key Players from last year’s state championship team.

The loss of pitchers Matt Krook and Nick Aiello, as well as infielders JP Marti and Ryan Cyr will certainly create some holes in the lineup, but Head Coach John Cate believes there is plenty of talent waiting in the wings to step up and fill those shoes.

“It’s always tough to lose key players from a championship team, but that’s just part of the game,” Cate said. “We have a lot of confidence in the group of guys we have coming back and we think they’re going to be able to pick up where last year’s team left off.”

One player who will be counted on to make a big impact is senior outfielder Connor Baca, who was a member of last year’s team but didn’t see much playing time Baca has been working hard to earn a starting spot this season and Cate believes he has the potential to be a difference-maker for the Brother Rice offense.

“Connor is a player we are really high on,” Cate said. “He didn’t get a lot of opportunities last year but he has really impressed us in practice so far and we think he has a chance to be a big contributor this season.”

The pitching staff will also have some new faces this season, but Cate is confident that they have the depth and talent to compete for another state title.

“We lost two really good pitchers in Matt Krook and Nick Aiello but we feel like we have some guys who can step in and do the job,” Cate said. “It might take them awhile to get adjusted to pitching at this level but I think they have the potential to be very solid starters for us.”
