What teams are expected to make a run at the state championship

With the start of the 2021 High school baseball season right around the corner, we take a look at what teams are expected to make a run at the state championship

In Division 1, there are a number of teams that are expected to be in contention for the title, including defending champion Detroit Catholic Central last year’s runner-up Saline, and a number of other teams that made it to the semifinals or quarterfinals in 2020.

In Division 2, Muskegon Oakridge is the defending champion and is once again expected to be one of the top teams in the state. They will be joined by last year’s semifinalist Grand Rapids South Christian, as well as a number of other teams that had strong seasons in 2020.

What non-conference games will be important to watch

As the weather warms up, High School Baseball teams are getting ready for their 2021 season. While the pandemic has forced some changes on the sport, fans can still expect a lot of exciting games this year. Here are some non-conference match-ups that should be on your radar.

1. Ann Arbor Pioneer vs. Ypsilanti Lincoln – April 6

This will be the first taste of competition for both teams, and should give us a good idea of where they stand heading into the rest of the season. Ann Arbor Pioneer is coming off a strong 2020 campaign in which they went 13-3 and made it to the semifinals of the conference tournament Ypsilanti Lincoln is looking to rebound after a tough 2020 season in which they went 8-11. This should be a good game between two evenly matched opponents.

2. East Lansing vs. Holt – April 8

East Lansing is coming into the season as the favorite to win their conference, but they will have to prove they can live up to the hype against some tough non-conference opponents. Holt is always a tough out, and this game will be a good early test for East Lansing. Holt is coming off a down year in 2020, but they always have one of the best pitching staffs in the state. This should be a low-scoring affair with plenty of intrigue.

3. Portage Central vs Mattawan – April 10

These two teams are usually near the top of their respective conferences, and this game should be no different. Both teams have strong pitching staffs and experienced hitters. This game could go either way, but it should be entertaining regardless of who comes out on top.

How will the weather affect Michigan high school baseball this season

While most of the nation shivers through another arctic blast, high school baseball teams in Michigan are already gearing up for the 2021 season. But with unseasonably cold temperatures and snow in the forecast, how will the weather affect Michigan high school baseball this season?

According to Mark O’Connell, president of the Michigan high school baseball Coaches Association, the weather has been a major topic of discussion among coaches this offseason. “We’ve had more conversations this year about the weather and how it might affect our season than I can ever remember,” O’Connell said. “I think everyone is just hoping for a normal spring.”

O’Connell said that most coaches are optimistic that the season will start on time and that they’ll be able to play a full schedule of games. However, he acknowledged that the early part of the season could be challenging. “If we have a lot of snow and cold temperatures early on, it’s going to make it tough to get outdoors and practice,” O’Connell said. “That’s why we’re really stressing to our coaches that they need to be prepared and have indoor facilities available.”

While the weather is a major concern for high school baseball coaches in Michigan, O’Connell said there are other issues that could impact the 2021 season as well. These include COVID-19 restrictions, which could limit the number of fans who are allowed to attend games, and a shortage of baseballs, which has caused prices to increase significantly.

Despite all of these challenges, O’Connell is hopeful that the 2021 high school baseball season in Michigan will be a successful one. “I think we’re all just looking forward to getting back out on the field and having some fun,” he said.
