Millington Baseball: A Local Tradition – The Early Years

Millington Baseball has been a local tradition for generations. The Early Years of Millington Baseball date back to the late 1800s. In those early years, the game was played on crudely marked out fields with teams of neighborhood kids. Around 1900, the first organized teams began to form in Millington and the surrounding communities. These teams were typically sponsored by a local business or organization, such as the Millington Presbyterian Church or the Millington Exchange Club. In the early years, there was no organized league play and each team would typically play only other nearby teams.

The first recorded game between two Millington teams took place on May 27, 1903, when the Exchange Club defeated the Presbyterians by a score of 16-4. This game was played on what would become known as “the sandlots” – an open field located behind what is now the Millington Education Center. Over the next several decades, baseball would remain a popular pastime in Millington, with games often being played on those same sandlots.

In 1938, a group of citizens led by Frank Jobe and Bill Burcham decided that it was time for Millington to have its own baseball field They formed a committee and began raising funds for construction of a new ballpark. With only $1,200 raised by June 1939, they approached the City of Memphis for help. The city donated six acres of land located at what is now Confederate Park and Jobe donated an additional two acres. Construction of “Jobe Field” began in August 1939 and was completed in time for Opening Day 1940. That first season saw six teams playing in the newly constructed ballpark: American Legion Post 102, Press scribes, Elam Apostles, Westside Merchants, Youngigers and Carver Cubs.
