NCS Baseball Tournament history
The North Coast Section Baseball Tournament kicks off this weekend with a full slate of games. The tournament, which began inway back in 1909, is the oldest continuously-run high school baseball tournament in the country.
Over the years, the tournament has undergone many changes. In its early years, it was open to any team in the section that wanted to compete. But as interest in the sport grew, so did the size of the tournament. By the late 1920s, it had ballooned to nearly 60 teams.
In order to keep the tournament manageable, organizers decided to limit it to just 24 teams beginning in 1930. That format remained in place for nearly 60 years, until it was expanded to 32 teams in 1988.
Another big change came in 2006, when the NCS decided to do away with automatic qualifiers and instead have all teams compete in a Playoff Game just to get into the tournament proper.
The current format has 64 teams playing first-round games this week, with those winners advancing to the double-elimination main draw next week. The Championship game will be played on Saturday, May 27 at Berkeley’s Evans Diamond.
NCS baseball tournament predictions
The North Coast Section Baseball Tournament is set to begin this weekend, and there are plenty of intriguing match-ups.
In the first round, we’ll see #1 seed De La Salle take on #16 Tamalpais. De La Salle is the clear favorite here, but anything can happen in the playoffs. If any team can upset De La Salle, it’s Tamalpais.
#2 seed Campolindo will take on #15 Concord in another first round match-up. Concord has had a tough season, but Campolindo will need to be careful not to take them lightly. This could be a trap game for Campolindo.
In the third match-up of the first round, we have #3 Bishop O’Dowd taking on Livermore. Bishop O’Dowd is a solid team, but Livermore is no pushover. This should be a good game, but Bishop O’Dowd should come out on top.
#4 seed Amador Valley will take on Dublin in the fourth first round match-up. Amador Valley is a strong team, but Dublin has been playing well lately and could give them a tough game. Amador Valley should win this one, but it could be closer than expected.
The fifth first round match-up features #5 Foothill taking on Newark Memorial. Foothill is the better team here, but Newark Memorial always seems to play well in the playoffs. This could be a close one, but Foothill should prevail.
#6 seed San Ramon Valley will take on Acalanes in the sixth first round match-up. San Ramon Valley is a strong team, but Acalanes always seems to give them a tough game. This one could go either way, but San Ramon Valley should come out on top.
In the seventh first round match-up, we have #7 seed California taking on Granada. California is a solid team, but Granada has been playing well lately and could give them a tough game. California should win this one, but it could be closer than expected.
