The National Hockey League’s Vezina Trophy is awarded annually to the goaltender who is “adjudged to be the best at this position”. It is named in honor of Georges Vezina, the goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens from 1910 until 1925, who died in 1926 of tuberculosis. The Trophy was first awarded after the 1926–27 NHL season and was awarded to the top goaltender as voted on by the League’s general managers. From 1946–47 until 1981–82, the goaltenders of the team allowing the fewest goals during the regular season were awarded the Vezina Trophy.

DuringVezzina’s tenure with the Montreal Canadiens, he won 6 Stanley Cups In 1917, he set a record by playing in 44 consecutive games and had 22 shutouts during his career, a record that stood until 1962 when it was surpassed by Terry Sawchuk. In 1998, Georges Vezina was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame posthumously as one of its “Originals”, meaning he was part of the inaugural induction class.

The Vezina trophy was first awarded at ͞the end of each season to the goalkeeper or goalkeepers having played a minimum of 25 games for the team with fewest goals scored against them.͟ This rule remained in effect until 1982 when it was amended to ͞the goalkeeper adjudged to be best at this position͟ as determined in a poll of all NHL general managers at ͞the end of each Regular Season
