The Early Years
In the early years, basketball was a game played with nine players on each side. The goal was to score baskets by throwing the ball into one of two baskets at each end of the court. The first team to reach a certain number of points (usually 50), won the game.
In Old Forge, Pennsylvania, basketball was introduced in 1897 by physical education teacher James Naismith It quickly became popular among the students, who played it in the school gymnasium.
Old Forge teams were very successful in those early years, winning many games against other schools in the area. The players on those teams were considered to be some of the best in the country.
The Forge in the 1950s
In the 1950s, the Forge was one of the top High School basketball teams in the nation. Led by future NBA Hall of Famer Jerry West the Forge went undefeated in league play and won back-to-back State Championships The team’s success helped put Old Forge on the map, and basketball became an important part of the town’s identity.
Today, the tradition of excellence continues. The Forge is once again one of the best high school Basketball teams in the state, and its players are some of the most sought-after recruits in the country. No matter where you go in Old Forge, you’ll find people who are passionate about their team and proud to be a part of its history.
The 1960s and 70s
In the 1960s and 70s, basketball in Old Forge was a symbol of community togetherness. Families would pack the stands of the high school gymnasium to watch their sons, brothers, and fathers play the game they all loved. Friday nights during Basketball season were sacred; they were a time when the community came together to support their team.
During this period, Old Forge Basketball Teams were some of the best in the state. In 1967, the team made it to the state semifinals, and in 1971 they made it to the State Finals The success of these teams instilled a sense of pride in the community that still exists today.
Old Forge basketball teams of the 1960s and 70s did more than just win games; they brought people together and created lasting memories.
The Golden Era
From the 1950’s through the early 1970’s,OFBB was a regional power, compiling an amazing 564-178 (.760) record. Under the leadership of legendary Head Coach Walt “Cookie” Perry, the team won nine league championships and six district titles. Perry coached future Division I standouts Mike Giomi and RonRowan, as well as eventual NBA player MoeRivera. During this stretch, Old Forge appeared in the state playoffs 14 times.
The Dynasty
The Old Forge basketball team has been dominant in recent years winning 4 state championships in a row. They are led by their star player Jimmy Murray, who has been with the team since he was a freshman. The team has gone undefeated in conference play for the past 3 years, and they are currently ranked #1 in the state. They are looking to continue their success this year and win another state championship
The New Forge
In 1975, the original Old Forge high school closed its doors for the last time. A new school, housed in a former elementary school building, opened in September 1976. The “new” school was christened Old Forge Jr/Sr high school The name would change again in 1979 to simply Old Forge Sr high school when the district discontinued housing junior high students in the building.
The Future of the Forge
The Old Forge Basketball team has a tradition of excellence that dates back many years. The team has won numerous championships and is respected by basketball fans all over the state. Recently, the team has been rebuilding its roster with young, talented players. The future of the Forge looks very bright, and the team is poised to make another run at a championship.

The Old Forge Basketball Program has a rich history of success. The teams have won numerous conference, sectional, and State Championships Old Forge basketball players have been named to All-State and All-American teams. Many have gone on to successful careers in college and Professional Basketball
