George Herman “Babe” Ruth Jr. was born February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland. A legendary figure in both baseball and American culture Ruth is considered one of the greatest players in history. He began his career with the Boston Red Sox helping the team to win three World Series titles. In 1920, he was sold to the New York Yankees where he would spend the rest of his career. Over the course of his 15-year career, Ruth set numerous records and helped the Yankees win seven more World Series titles. He retired in 1935 with a then-record 714 home runs
Lou Gehrig was born in New York City on June 19, 1903. Gehrig is widely considered one of the greatest first baseman of all time. He spent his entire 17-year career with the New York Yankees from 1923 to 1939. Nicknamed “The Iron Horse” for his durability, Gehrig set several records during his career, including most career Grand Slams (23) and most consecutive games played (2,130). His illustrious career came to an abrupt end when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), now commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He died two years later at the age of 37.
Willie Mays was born on May 6, 1931 in Westfield, Alabama. A brilliant all-around player, Mays is often considered one of the greatest players in history. He began his Major League Baseball career in 1951 with the New York Giants before moving to San Francisco when the team relocated in 1958. During his 22-year career, Mays won two MVP Awards and was selected for 24 All-Star Games. He retired in 1973 with 660 home runs — third most all time at that point — and over 3,000 hits.
