The top 10 PIAA Baseball teams

There is a lot of debate every year about which Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association baseball teams are the best in the state. This ranking seeks to provide some clarity by determining the top 10 teams in the state, regardless of classification.

To create this ranking, various factors were considered, including a team’s record, Strength of Schedule recent results and post-season success. These factors were weighted differently to create a comprehensive ranking that should provide a good indication of which teams are the best in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) is a voluntary association of public and private schools which governs many high school and junior high school sports and competitive activities in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States

The PIAA was founded in 1906 to govern interscholastic athletics in the state. It is the second largest such association in the United States with 1,142 member schools (as of 2019-20). The PIAA’s offices are located in the Harrisburg suburb of Mechanicsburg.

In 2019, there were 498,638 athletes enrolled in PIAA schools playing 12 different sports. 45% of those were involved in baseball.

The top piaa baseball teams for 2018

10. Upper Dublin Cardinals (District One)

Upper Dublin went 18-6 last year and won their second straight district title. They have a strong pitching staff led by senior Brendan May, who had a 1.09 ERA last year. The Cardinals will also be relying on a group of talented seniors, including third baseman Tony Gallo and outfielder Shane Kelly.

9. Roman Catholic Cahillites (District 12)

Roman Catholic went 14-7 last season and won the district title. Senior pitcher Brandon Coyle is the team’s top player and he’ll be joined by fellow seniors, catcher Matt Gilewicz and infielder Joe Cyclamen. The Cahillites will be looking to make a deep run in the state playoffs this year.

8. Conestoga Pioneers (District One)

Conestoga went 16-8 last year and reached the semifinals of the district playoffs. They have a strong pitching staff led by senior Alex Carr, who had a 1.72 ERA last season. The Pioneers will also be relying on senior infielder Ryan Creighton and senior outfielder Will Kengor.

7. Northwestern Lebanon Vikings (District Three)

Northwestern Lebanon went 22-2 last year and won the district title. They have a talented team that includes senior pitcher Braden Knight, who had a 0.96 ERA last season, and senior infielder/outfielder Brock Boyer, who hit .494 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs. The Vikings will be looking to make a deep run in the state playoffs this year.
