The field hockey program is divided into two distinct divisions. Division I consists of those schools whose enrollment is less than 1250 girls in grades 10 through 12. Division II is composed of those schools whose enrollment is 1250 or more girls in grades 10 through 12. There are separate State Championships awarded in each division. A school may elect to play up a division, but may not play down.

In order to be eligible to participate in the PIAA Field Hockey Championships, a team must first qualify through its District Tournament. The district champion and runner-up in each classification advance to the state tournament

PIAA District 3 consists of LICENSED SECONDARY SCHOOLS within the following counties: Adams, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Huntington, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland , Perry , Snyder , Schuylkill , Union & York . Each of these schools that offers field hockey as a varsity sport and that meets all other PIAA eligibility requirements shall be members of this Association for field hockey purposes only .
