The first recorded game of basketball was played at YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, on January 20, 1892. The game was invented by Dr. James Naismith a physical education teacher at the YMCA who was looking for an indoor activity to keep his students occupied during the winter months. Naismith originally created the game with 18TH century peach baskets and a Soccer Ball and the first games were played with nine players on each team.
The game quickly caught on in popularity, and by 1897 there were already hundreds of teams playing in YMCAs across the country. The first Professional Basketball league was organized in 1898, and the first college basketball game was played in 1899.
Basketball became an official Olympic sport in 1936, and by 1950 there were professional leagues in both Europe and South America. Today, basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world, with millions of people playing at all levels of competition.

Basketball has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1891. The game was invented by Dr. James Naismith a physical education teacher at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was looking for an indoor activity that would keep his students active during the cold winter months. Naismith came up with the idea of two teams trying to get a ball into elevated baskets at either end of the gymnasium. The game quickly caught on, and within a few years, basketball courts were being built all over the country.
The game continued to grow in popularity, and by the early 1900s, professional leagues were being formed. The first professional league was the National Basketball League (NBL), which was founded in 1898.
