The Providence Field Hockey program has a rich tradition of success, dating back to its founding in 1977. The team has won nine conference championships and made seven NCAA tournament appearances, including two trips to the Final Four. The Friars have also produced 19 All-Americans, 25 NFHCA Academic All-Americans, and four Olympians.

The History of Providence Field Hockey

Providence Field hockey has a long and proud tradition of excellence. The program has been one of the most successful in the country, winning numerous conference championships and appearing in several NCAA tournaments.

The team began play in the early 1970s, quickly becoming one of the powers in the Northeast. In 1975, theFriars won their first conference championship and made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament Providence would go on to win conference titles in 1976, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998.

The Friars have also been very successful in the NCAA tournament They have made 18 appearances in the tournament with their best finish coming in 1985 when they reached the Elite Eight. The team has also made three trips to the Final Four (1979 & 1981) with their most recent appearance coming in 1998.

Providence is also one of only four Field Hockey programs to have won at least 20 games in a season 30 times. The Friars have accomplished this feat 31 times with their most recent 20-win season coming in 2016.

Providence Field Hockey A Tradition of Excellence

Providence College has a long tradition of excellence in field hockey dating back to the early days of the program. The Friars have won 12 Big East regular season titles and 11 Big East Tournament titles, and have made 17 NCAA tournament appearances. Providence is one of only four schools to have won both the regular season and tournament titles in the same year, and is the only school to have done so twice.

The Friars have produced a number of standout players over the years, including eight All-Americans and four Olympians. The most recent All-American is senior midfielder Sophie de Bruijn, who was named to the 2020 NFHCA Division I All-America Second Team. De Bruijn is also a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year, and was named the 2020 Big East Tournament MVP after leading the Friars to their second straight conference title

Providence will look to continue its tradition of excellence in 2021, as it returns a number of Key Players from last year’s team. The Friars are led by de Bruijn and senior forward Nina Wager, who were both named preseason All-Big East The team also welcomes back junior goalkeeper Claire Dooley, who was named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
