A History of Success

Rockhurst high school has a rich tradition in baseball, winning numerous conference championships and state titles. The program has produced many Major League baseball players including Hall of Famer George Brett Rockhurst is also one of the few high schools in the country to have its own baseball stadium which is named after Brett.

The Making of a Tradition

Rockhurst Baseball is a tradition of excellence that began in 1923. The program has produced many Major League Baseball players, including two-time All-Star catcher Darrell Porter and World Series winning pitcher Mark Davis. Rockhurst has also been home to a number of legendary coaches, including Fred Hutchinson Whitey Herzog, and Bill Terry.

Today, Rockhurst baseball is still one of the premier programs in the country. The team has made nineteen appearances in the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament most recently in 2014. They have also won twelve conference championships, including five in the last ten years.

The Rockhurst varsity baseball team has won eight State Championships nine district championships, and three conference championships in its history. The team has also been ranked in the top 25 nationally by various publications on multiple occasions.

The Rockhurst junior varsity baseball team has also had success, winning five district championships and four conference championships in its history.

The Rockhurst freshman Baseball Team has won two conference championships in its history.

The Rockhurst baseball program has produced numerous Major League baseball players including Hall of Famer Lou Brock All-Star Steve Stone and current Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Heath Hembree.

The Coaching Staff

Rockhurst high school has a long-standing tradition of success on the baseball diamond and that tradition starts with the Coaching Staff

Head coach Tony Diggs has been at the helm of the Hawklets program for more than 20 years, and during that time he has led the team to six state championships and eight conference titles. Coach Diggs’ biggest strength is his ability to develop young talent, as evidenced by the fact that more than 30 of his former players have gone on to play professional baseball

Assistant coaches Mike Sansone and Steve Goldberg round out the staff. Coach Sansone is a Rockhurst alum who played minor league baseball for several years before returning to his alma mater to give back to the program that helped him develop into a professional player. Coach Goldberg also played Minor League Baseball before embarking on a successful coaching career at the collegiate level. He joined the Rockhurst staff in 2017.

Under the guidance of this experienced and talented coaching staff the Hawklets are poised for continued success on the diamond for many years to come.

The Players

The pitchers are a diverse group, with each player bringing their own unique skills to the team. Jack is followed by hard-throwing right-hander Tommy Michaels, who often uses his speed to surprise hitters. Lefty Steve Johnson rounds out the rotation, and he is known for his deceptive delivery and pinpoint accuracy.

Head Coach Matt Riser has done an excellent job recruiting and developing talent, and the team is in good hands moving forward.

We expect Rockhurst to be a perennial contender in the Missouri Valley Conference and we are excited to see what the team can do in the coming years. With the conference’s recent move to Division I, Rockhurst will have a chance to prove itself against some of the best teams in the country.
