Early life and education

Sanaa Lathan was born in New York City the daughter of Sheila Flint, a doctor, and Stan Lathan a television director and producer. She attended Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics. She graduated from the Yale School of Drama with a master’s degree in fine arts.

Career

After studying drama at the University of California Berkeley, Lathan found work in television, landing a role in the short-lived series In the House (1995) before snagging a part in Moesha (1996). From there, she moved on to the big screen, appearing in minor roles in The Best Man (1999) and Love & Basketball (2000), opposite Omar Epps. Lathan’s casting as Monica Wright Morris, a talented Ung Basketball player who falls for her High School teammate Quincy McCall (Epps), was a breakout role for the actress.
